Part 1 🌈
On Fri. May 29th I deleted my social media accounts and made the 3.25 hr drive up to southern Vermont. I had planned to come here the week before, but my car died on me before I left the driveway.
.
I came to Vermont for a few reasons — a change of scenery, wanting to leave the place I’d been isolated for 2.5 months.. I also wanted to leave because for the past few weeks, I was feeling increasingly depressed. I had seen arguably the worst thing I’d ever seen before — the death of Ahmaud Aubrey. It’s upsetting to replay that moment and I don’t think it ever won’t be. That really shook me. I made a plea on Instagram for people to stop just reposting information and take some action. Some great individuals contributed $575 total which I donated to a cause.
.
That moved me and I felt better. It was something, and I felt heard.

Part 2 🌳
Cut to a few days later. News about Breonna Taylor. Days later. That Karen from Central Park making a bogus 911 call, and news about a man killed by a policeman kneeling on his neck. I would not watch the video of George Floyd’s murder, but before even knowing about that incident, I remember posting a hashtag #tiredTiredTIRED, and that’s the last thing I’ve posted, until now.
.
Since being in Vermont and basically cutting out all news, only engaging in the barest forms of communication with family and some friends, I knew things were escalating. I was getting text messages from people asking if I was okay and I wondered at first, is there some hashtag going around telling people to check in on their minority friends? I remember thinking, wtf is going down? but knew I wasn’t ready yet to re-engage.
.
And I sit a bit conflicted with that. But it’s okay. Because this isn’t over.

Part 3 ✊🏾🙏🏾💪🏾
It took some time but I started to feel like myself again. The depression was lifting. I called my brother and basically said ... what have I missed. I redownloaded Instagram. I took a scroll through Facebook. I see that the globe is making a stand for justice. This is a human rights issue — and it’s overwhelming.
.
In a way, I’m content that I ‘missed’ this escalation. I was working on unpacking an already heavy load and to have added more would have just been so hard.
.
I give shouts to those who have been in this from the beginning, for their entire lives. To those that are in the streets protesting and raising their voices to be heard. I am here and I am with you. Coming out of the woods. ✊🏾✨

<![CDATA[ToroComm <> Thomas Tells A Story!]]>Thu, 06 Dec 2018 15:17:17 GMThttp://toro-communications.com/blog/torocomm-ltgt-thomas-tells-a-story
Very happy to share that I have been working with Thomas Tells A Story on his script for the podcast, The Elandrid! We've been collaborating since August of this year, and you can expect to hear episode 1 in January 2019.

What does "Elandrid" mean, exactly? It's a combination of the name "Elandra" and the great epic tale, The Iliad. Elandra is the story's main character, and she is a very bad ass First Arcanist of the United Star Systems Alliance. In a universe where magic rules, there is a struggle for control between over what is thought to be a possible threat, and what actually is one.

I especially love this series because Elandra is a woman of color, and I think she is written with great service.

In the oral tradition of the ancient Greeks, Thomas Constantine Moore will read each episode in its entirety, setting each up as if told around a campfire on a dark shore of a Mediterranean coast.

Follow Thomas Tells A Story on Facebook and Instagram for updates.

Miss Manhattan Hangs Out...with Toro Adeyemi

When I arrive at the clean, white offices of Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness, Toro Adeyemi greets me in bright red shorts and shoes with a white blouse. Red, I will learn, is her color—it is also braided through her hair. It’s a fitting color, too, since Toro exudes a confidence most women dream of, walking with a quiet power and grace along the halls of this marketing agency that focuses on promoting consumers’ well-being.

An Integrated Producer at SSW, as it’s known, Toro is responsible for managing several in-house projects at once. She gives me a tour, spending time in the photo and design studio, where she loves to check in on photography and design projects that stir her creativity. Here, and by occasionally doing voice-overs for the company’s recorded media projects, she feels inspired.

We sit and chat at her desk, sprinkled with notes from co-workers—my favorites say ’Toro, you are good at getting dressed’ and ‘Toro Pump Time' with a little drawing of a woman looking tough. Because when she is not at SSW, Toro is a certified Bodypump (a low-weight, high-repetition weightlifting class) and Bodycombat (a non-contact, high-energy workout inspired by martial arts) instructor at gyms in New York.

Graduating college without a job, the gym became Toro’s routine. An instructor noticed her technique and asked if she’d consider teaching. She did, and stuck with it even after getting hired at office jobs she ultimately did get. Not having a job after college also led Toro to start her own marketing and PR strategy business, Toro Communications, which she continues to maintain as well. Working with boutique arts companies across New York, she has been able to get them press in places like The New York Times.

Soon, Toro swaps her red heels for sneakers, her office attire for workout clothes, as she goes to teach Bodypump. She would love to move to Thailand for a while and get her massage therapy and yoga certification in one go. “There’s more to life than this, you know?” she says, tapping her foot on the concrete for emphasis.

She puts her braids in a bun and arrives in a room full of women who have already begun setting up barbells, mats, and towels. In her nearly three years as an instructor, Toro has developed a following of sorts, with people coming to specifically to take class with her even when she teaches at different locations. Some of her regulars are here, and she greets them by name, also introducing herself to people she doesn’t know, before putting on vibrant, bass heavy music and setting up her own equipment. Preferring not to be just a voice, Toro does all the exercises along with her class.

“This is not supposed to be easy!” she says to the class over the music as they lift first barbells then weight plates then themselves. “Your body will thank you later!” Sweat drips down her face, somehow with the same grace and power as before.

<![CDATA[TORO COMM <> BELIEVE ME OFFICIAL!]]>Tue, 07 Mar 2017 08:00:00 GMThttp://toro-communications.com/blog/toro-comm-believe-me-official
So happy to have believe me official as a new client!
BELIEVE ME is an apparel company started by two women who were sick of the normalization of sexual violence. Their designs feature anti-sexual violence and pro-consent messaging in order to empower people and start a dialogue. Part of the profits on their "no means no" hats go directly to The New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault, an organization that works to stamp out sexual violence and provide support and resources for survivors. Part of the profits on their "consent is key" hats go directly to Project Consent, an organization running an amazing campaign to raise awareness about sexual violence and the importance of consent.

They hope to one day live in a world where a company like believe me does not need to exist. Until ALL our spaces are free from sexual assault and violence, they will keep on creating empowering apparel.

Show your support and purchase a hat for you or a friend! Visit www.believemeofficial.com
Gotta love changing society for the better~

Loading Dock Theatre Presents:

In The Dudleys!, family memories are brought to life as a malfunctioning 8-bit video game. Vic returns to his childhood home late one night and discovers his old NES, and as he plays vintage games from his youth, he starts remembering…and his memories become the game itself. By dodging ghosts, undying zombies, and evil Aunts side-scrolling through the neighborhood, Vic tries to win a game that might not be for winning. Featuring 8-bit video animation and music composed on reprogrammed Atari, Commodore, Gameboy, and Nintendo consoles, The Dudleys! is a story of family, regret, and the games we play to get by.
